Wayne Welton Shanholtz

Wayne Welton Shanholtz died Monday June 22, 2009 at his home in Moorefield, WV. The son of the late Elva Wales Shanholtz and the late Evalena Clark Cunningham Shanholtz, Wayne was born on April 29, 1926 in Piedmont, WV. He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Zetta Childers Shanholtz (Moorefield) whom he married on July 12, 1948; his sons Wayne, Jr., (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Thomas and wife, Kathy Dayton Shanholtz (Moorefield); his daughters, Shelia Shanholtz Lightner (Stephenson, VA) and Jayne Shanholtz Cooper (Winchester, VA). He is also survived by six grandchildren: Sara Lightner Souther and husband John and Andrew Lightner (Morgantown, WV), Jessica Lynn and John Calvin Shanholtz (Moorefield, WV) and Jacob and Carter Wayne Cooper (Winchester, VA). Younger brother Allan D. Shanholtz and wife Linda of Oceanview, DE also survives. Mr. Shanholtz was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Donnie Shanholtz. Mr. Shanholtz was descended from Dr. Nicholas Leatherman who was the first resident minister of the Old Pine Church of the Brethren in Purgitsville, WV. When the Church of the Brethren in Moorefield was chartered, Wayne and his parents were founding members. Mr. Shanholtz taught Sunday school in the early years of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren. When Wayne was a junior in high school, he took extra credits so that he could graduate early and join the U.S. Navy during WWII. Although his service was denied at that time due to health reasons, the U.S. Army called Wayne several years later to serve as a Signal Corpsman during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and returned to his wife, baby daughter, and career with the West Virginia Department of Highways. During his 37 years of employment with the WVDOH, Wayne began as a surveyor and at the time of his retirement, Wayne was an Engineering Technician and district supervisor for surveying and construction. Mr. Shanholtz enjoyed gardening, reading and woodworking. The name, Shanholtz, literally means ?beautiful woods? in German and is often translated to mean woodworker. He will be sadly missed by his family. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington St with Pastors Russell & Lucy Webster officiating. Interment will follow with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the U.S. Army and the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard at the Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 ? 4 & 7 ? 9 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
