Vera Cerena Applegate

Vera Cerena Applegate, age 91 of Flat Top Road, Ghent, WV, and a frequent visitor to Moorefield, passed away Monday morning, December 2, 2013 at the Applachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV. Born February 25, 1922 at Ghent, WV, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Dee Sweeney and Esta Maggie (Williams) Sweeney. Her husband of 58 years, Roy L. Applegate preceded her in death in May 1995. Sisters, Lelia E. Cottle and Joy I. Hale and a brother Alvin D. Sweeney also preceded her in death. A lifelong resident of Ghent, she was a member of the Ghent Missionary Baptist Church and was the owner /operator of Veras Beauty Shop for many years. Surviving are four daughters, Pattie M. Fraley (Tom) of Moorefield, WV, Seretha F. Mills of Pittsboro, IN, Darfane L. Ramsey (Mike Richmond) of Cool Ridge, WV and Beebee D. Shrewsbury (Basil) of Odd, WV, two sons, Stanley E. Applegate of Bartow, WV and Zeke Applegate of Ghent, WV; a brother, Lonnie L. Sweeney of Beckley, WV; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 PM Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Homes Shady Spring Chapel, 729 Flat Top Road, Shady Spring, WV. Interment will follow at the Tom Lilly Cemetery, Flat Top, WV. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until time of services at 1:00 PM on Thursday.
