Tommie Leonard Hefner, age 79 of Petersburg, WV formerly of Moorefield, WV, passed away Tuesday morning, December 15, 2020 at Davis Medical Center in Elkins, WV. Born on June 26, 1941 in Hardy County, WV, he was a son of the late William Gordon Hefner and Hattie Mae Crites Hefner. Brothers, Raymond, Johnnie & Gordon and sisters, Anna Raines and Shirley Hefner preceded him in death.
Tommie graduated from Moorefield High School in 1960; was a US Army veteran, where he served as a military policeman. He was a Moorefield Town Police Officer alongside his cousin, Charlie Hefner who gave him the nickname "Toody". After time as an officer, he became superintendent of the Town of Moorefield and later retired from Wampler Longacre as a security guard. He was a member of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren.
Tommie was the most loving and loyal son, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved his family unconditionally. He was a stranger to none and treated everyone like family. Every individual who entered his home was welcomed and loved and he was known as "pappy" to many. He gave almost everyone a nickname. You could often find him playing his guitar and making music with a chew of his beech-nut tobacco or spending time with his great-granddaughter, Maddison Hedrick, "Wally" as he called her. She was the apple of his eye.
Surviving is a daughter, Carol "Lucas" Broadwater of Petersburg, WV; a son Tommie "Crow" (Toni) Hefner, II, of Edinburg, VA; a sister, Mary Alice (Landon) Shobe of Moorefield, WV; four granddaughters, Brandi "Mouse" (TJ) Hedrick, Leanna Brooke Hefner, Teri "Pud" Broadwater and Cassie Hefner; three step-grandchildren, Jay Adams, Amber Adams and Heather Adams; three great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Esther Jean Hefner of Moorefield, WV and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Private family services will be held with Military Honors accorded by the US Army and interment will be in the Scott Cemetery, Moorefield, WV, where he will be buried alongside his mother "Fuzzy" and father Bill whom he missed and loved so much.
The family will host a dinner to celebrate his life when restrictions on gathering have been lifted.
