Thelma Arretta Ayers, age 84 of Washington Street, Moorefield, WV passed away Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2018 at the E.A. Hawse Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Baker, WV. Born on February 17, 1933 in Moorefield, WV she was a daughter of the late James William Helmick, Jr. and Alice Pauline Polly Whetzel Helmick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Air Force Sergeant Raymond Lee Ayers in January 1997; sisters, Alfreda Leatherman and Betty Shirley; brothers, Hayden Helmick, James Vic Helmick, Junior Wayne Tooney Helmick and a step grandson Kyle Helmick. As they were growing up, all of the neighborhood boys were frequent visitors at Thelmas house. Knowing that shed have food for them, theyd stop in where shed welcome them to fill their stomachs. A military wife, she was a devoted mother and grandmother and later a part time cook at local restaurants including Colts and Sunset, where she was well known for her delicious pies. Surviving are three sons, Raymond W. Buck Ayers and wife Cindy of Moorefield, WV, Eston L. Booger Ayers and wife Linda of Goldsboro, NC and Brian E. Rusty Ayers and wife Tammie of Moorefield, WV; a brother, Monterey Ray Helmick and wife Lucy of Singers Glen, VA; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 PM Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastor Jon Lenninger officiating.
