Russell William Fitzwater

Russell William Fitzwater, age 82 of Moorefield, WV, passed away Friday evening, December 17, 2004 at his residence. Born May 1, 1922 at Fort Run, Hardy County, WV, he was a son of the late Abraham Jackson Fitzwater and the late Mary Nancy Catherine Whetzel Fitzwater. A daughter, a grandson, three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Surviving is his wife of 57 Years, Geneva L. (Funk) Fitzwater; two sons, Larry A. Fitzwater of Germantown, MD and Darrell W. Fitzwater of Edgewater, FL; a daughter, Paula Jeanne Fitzwater Treidel of Annapolis, MD; a brother, Noah Fitzwater of Moorefield, WV; two sisters, Shirley Hose & Maxine Shrout of Moorefield, WV; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He retired from Railway Express Agency in 1975 and was a US Army veteran of WWII of the 612 Pack Artillery having seen action in India and Burma. He received two bronze stars for serving in battle, a good conduct medal and a meritorious service award. He also was a veteran of the Korean War, having served at Ft. Meade, MD as a Sergeant, training troops. He was a member of the John M. Golliday Post #64 American Legion for 59 years where he served as the Post Commander and Sergeant of Arms. He also served on the American Legion Board of Directors for 12 years and was an Honorary Member of the Moorefield Veteran?s Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the South Branch Voiture #1535 40/8, the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren and the Hardy County Rod & Gun Club. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren with Pastors Harold Garber and Matt Lyon officiating. Interment will follow with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the US Army and the Moorefield Veteran?s Honor Guard at the Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 ? 4 & 6 ? 8 PM, Monday at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield. A Veteran?s Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
