Paul William Hardy, age 91 of Rig West Road, Moorefield, WV went to be with the Lord Monday evening, December 24, 2018 at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. Born on March 28, 1927 in Rig, WV he was a son of the late William “Bill” Abraham Hardy and Grace Rumer Hardy. Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Evans Hardy in November 2009. Two sisters, Mernie Evans and Ruth Crider-Simons also preceded him in death.
Surviving is a son, Terry P. and wife Kathy Hardy of Moorefield, WV; two granddaughters, Dr. Sarah Hardy of Hot Springs, AR and Anne Hardy of Washington, DC; two brothers, John E. Hardy of Cabins, WV and James W. Hardy of Moorefield, WV along with many nephews, nieces and friends.
Paul was a welder for Allegheny Mining in Mount Storm for more than 20 years. Prior to this he was a heavy equipment operator and was among the first group of men employed by the late Elvin Riggleman. He finished his working career with the WV Department of Highways as an equipment operator. Paul was a talented individual who could repair or create whatever was needed to get the job done.
A World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army he served at the end of the war in the European Theater where he was part of the occupation forces in Germany until his Honorable Discharge in 1946. He was a member of the John M. Golliday Post #64 American Legion.
As a lifelong resident of Rig, Paul was a member of the Oak Dale Christian Church for more than 55 years; serving as a trustee for many years and Superintendent of Sunday School several times. He was also very active in the creation and remodeling of the Rig Civic Center.
A Celebration of Life will be held beginning at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Oak Dale Christian Church with Pastors Lynn Rohrbaugh and Dan Sterns officiants. Interment will follow at the Newhouse Cemetery where Military Graveside Rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army and the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 PM Friday at the Fraley Funeral Home, 107 Washington Street.
