Lewis Jerald Marquis, age 87 of Cabins, WV, passed away Monday morning, May 15, 2023, at his residence with his beloved daughter at his side. She made a promise to allow him to die at home and his wish was honored with the help of Grant Memorial Hospice and multiple other agencies. Born on November 6, 1935, in Parkersburg, WV, he was a son of the late Warren Arthur Marquis and Lucille Ambrosine Jane Marquis. His wife, Dianne Warfield Marquis whom he married on June 20, 1989, preceded him in death in November 2021. A son, Monty B. Marquis, a daughter, Barby D. Marquis, a granddaughter, Ashley A. Mowery, a brother, Larry F. Marquis and a sister Shelia K. Marquis also preceded him in death.
Lewis was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. A Lifetime member of the NRA, he was an excellent marksman as he traveled and competed extensively in shooting competitions with a rifle and shotgun. Never afraid of hard work, Lewis retired several times in his lifetime from many jobs including the Lost River State Park. Even after retirement, he continued to work at numerous places in the area as his unbelievable work ethic would not allow him to relax and enjoy retirement.
He had an insatiable love of bluegrass music and enjoyed playing any stringed instrument. He had the honor and privilege of playing with legends and numerous bluegrass bands including N2PICKN, where he was a member. He also was a member of numerous organizations through the years but he was passionate about and served as President of the Mathias Ruritans.
Surviving is a son, Jacob F. Marquis; a daughter, Rebecca A. Mowery of Baker, WV; his grandsons, Hunter Nelson of Baker, WV and Joshua Park; a sister, Sonja Karen (Tom) Hoffman of Ravenswood, WV and numerous nieces and nephews and a family friend who was like a son, Billy Keplinger and the entire Keplinger family that sort of adopted Lewis.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM at the Jenkins Chapel UMC Cemetery, 210 E Ridge Road, Mathias, WV 26812 with Military Graveside Rites Accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Moorefield Veteran’s Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until time of services at 1:00 PM.
