Janet Haig Jackson Butts passed away on January 4, 2014 at Winchester Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. Born June 1, 1940 in Cumberland MD, she was the daughter of the late Col. J. Haig Jackson and Gwendolyn Mae Hardman Jackson. Her mother passed away at childbirth, and Haig was remarried to Ruth Ridder Jackson. Since her father was deployed with the Army Corp of Engineers in Europe during WWII, Janet was raised by her Grandparents Mable (Mum) and John Willie (Jack) Jackson in Lonaconing MD. Her Great Aunt Margaret (Marnet) Sowers was a great help. Married to the late Gary Lee Butts she is the mother of Jennifer Jackson Butts and Melissa Jeanne (Larry) Butts-Foster. Her grandchildren are Gary Ottley and Dane Jackson Foster. She also had multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Mrs. Butts worked as a teacher/guidance counselor at Moorefield High School for 34 years. In her retirement she loved to bird watch around the world and was an avid gardener. Mrs. Buttss greatest joys were spending time with friends and family, serving the community through Emmanuel Episcopal Church activities and learning new things. Mrs. Butts was also a founding member of the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Funeral Services will be conducted 5:00 PM Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington St. The family will receive friends from 6 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
