George William Runion

George William Runion, age 95, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, April 19, 2024, at his residence in Moorefield, WV surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 28, 1928, in the South Fork area of Moorefield to the late Walter Nelson Runion and Bessie Taylor Thompson Runion. He was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.

In his youth and high school years, George's passion for music led him to join a band called the "Dixie Boys" along with four others. A distinguished veteran of the U.S. Army, he dedicated 30 years of his life in service to his country, serving in various locations around the world including Korea and Vietnam during their respective wars. George's unwavering commitment and integrity earned him the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant (E-8).

Throughout his military career, which spanned several duty stations and countries, George consistently demonstrated excellence and dedication. In addition to his military duties, he also found joy in serving as an umpire for the U.S. Army European Athletic Association during his time in France and Korea.

Upon retiring from the military, George returned to Moorefield where he remained active in the community, working at Sherman's Machine Shop and Parts Store as well as Walmart before his final retirement.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Lou See Runion; sons Sterling E. Runion (Melissa Hamilton), William D. (La Donna) Runion, and Elijah M. Runion; daughters Brenda L. Sweitzer, Cherry L. Hammons, Betty K. (Eric) Hoge, and Penny L. Sites (Phil Vance);  as well as sixteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to celebrate George's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Flynn officiating. Following the service, George will be laid to rest at Olivet Cemetery with Full Military Honors. The family will be receiving friends from 4 - 7 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.

George William Runion will be remembered fondly for his dedication to his country and community, his love for music, sports officiating, and above all else, for being a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather whose presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
