George Gordon Raines, age 84 of Spring Avenue, Moorefield, WV, passed away Sunday evening, March 18, 2018 at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. Born December 22, 1933 in Old Fields, WV, he was a son of the late Homer Leota Raines and Thelma Virginia Liller Raines. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Eva Lee Sites Raines in August 2015. Two brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death. Gordon was born in Old Fields, grew up in Kessel and in 1953 graduated from Moorefield High School. He was a talented athlete and especially a gifted pitcher. He served in the United States Marine Corps for four years and returned home to his wife and new daughter to try his hand at running the Valley Esso Service Station. He was also employed for many years by M.A. Bean. He was a hard working farmer who loved working the land and tending his cattle. He served as deputy tax assessor and Assessor for Hardy County. He enjoyed meeting people, talking and telling stories. He was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Gordon also sang with the Potomac Valley Mens Choir for more than fifteen years. If you stopped by to visit Gordon, you may have heard him sing a favorite song or two as he had an amazing memory for the words to many old songs. Gordon was a fifty year member of the Moorefield Masonic Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M. A lifelong Democrat, Gordon was honored as the Hardy County Outstanding Democrat of the year for 2016. Gordon never met a stranger and helped many people who were in need. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. Surviving are two daughters, Teresa Gail Eye & husband Curtis of Moorefield, WV and Christine Elaine Nash and husband Russell of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Ashley & Dena Eye, Sean Eye and Caitlin Bowen; great-grandchildren, Weston Eye, Rowan Eye and Wyatt Bowen; a sister, Juanita Raines See of Fisher, WV and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastors Jeff Anderson and Dan Sterns officiating. Interment will follow with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the U.S. Marines and the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard and Masonic Graveside Rites accorded by the Moorefield Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M. at the Olivet Cemetery.
