Frances Jane Shaffer, age 91 of Sanford, NC formerly of Moorefield, WV passed away Wednesday morning, July 26, 2017 at her residence in Sanford. She was born on October 6, 1925 in Gannes, PA, a daughter of the late Alexander Thomas Bailey and Nancy Ellen Marshall Bailey. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Carl M. Stevens in June 1962; her 2nd husband Arthur Dale Shaffer in May 1982; a son, Carl M. Stevens, II; five brothers and four sisters. Frances was a retired Nurse having started her career in Morgantown and retiring from Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. Growing up in Pennsylvania her road to adulthood was full of hardship starting with losing both her parents by the age of six. She and her siblings moved in with other family members on a farm and she then suffered a horrible accident. But she never let that deter her and she eventually began her own family only then to be set by another loss of her 1st husband. Again she worked to overcome her tribulation and eventually marrying again to a husband who liked to fish and hunt like her, only she had to teach him how to deer hunt. They came to the South Branch Valley to hunt and fish and fell in love with the area. This became her new home as she would often scour the bottomlands in search of arrowheads by day and would crochet numerous items for the family in her otherwise spare time, saying it always helped her arthritis. Surviving is a son, Michael D. Shaffer of Fisher, WV; three daughters, Jane L. Stevens of Fisher, WV, Carol S. Stiltner & Cristin L. Kisner of Sanford, NC; twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastor Nathan Ertel officiating. Interment will follow at the Newhouse Cemetery, Rig Road, Moorefield, WV. The family will receive friends from 5 - 8 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
