Eugene Matson Brand

Eugene Matson Brand, Gene, age 91 of Mountain View Road, Purgitsville, WV, passed away Thursday morning, September 12, 2013 at his residence. Born April 28, 1922 in Morgantown, WV, he was the son of late Archie Camden Brand and Elizabeth Betsy Mae (Matson) Brand. His wife, Ruth M. (Evans) Brand preceded him in death in January 1997. A brother, Warren Brand and a sister, Mary Venters also preceded him in death. He was the last member of his immediate family. He was a US Marine Corps veteran of WWII having served in the Pacific Theater at Roi-Namur and Iwo Jima as a tank operator. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 64 and the V.F.W. Post # 9606. Always considered a farmer, he and his late wife ran Brands Grocery for many years; was a cost analyst for the WV Department of Highways; was an accomplished artist and history buff. Surviving are nephews, nieces, caregivers and close friends. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 PM Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington St. in Moorefield. Military Graveside Rites accorded by the US Marine Corps will follow at the Mountain View Church Cemetery, Purgitsville, WV.
