Agnes Rae Pownell

Agnes Rae “Aggie” Corbin Pownell, age 92 of Moorefield, WV, passed away Sunday morning, June 25, 2023, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV.  She was born in Romney, WV, on August 9, 1930, the daughter of the late Bruce Miller Corbin, Sr. and Pearl Gladys Shelley Corbin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Bryce Pownell in April 1987.  She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Amereihn, Ruth Dawson and Pauline Davis and a brother Bruce M. Corbin, Jr.  

Surviving are her four children, Donald Pownell (Margaret), Patti Reid (Jim), Joyce Simon (Bob) and Tim Pownell (Jennifer).  Mrs. Pownell was blessed with six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. 

Agnes and Elmo moved from Romney to Moorefield in 1949.  They joined the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church in 1953 where Agnes joined the women’s circle and was a faithful member for 70 years. In her commitment to community Aggie served as President of the District United Methodist Women for many years, President of the Burlington Children’s Home Auxiliary.

She was Worthy Matron of Moorefield Chapter 102 of Eastern Star, President of Habitat for Humanity, was a Hospice volunteer for 10 years, was a charter member of the Winchester Hospital “Mended Heart Society,” served as Den Mother for her son’s Scout Troops, Officer of the MHS Band Boosters, and President of the Parent Teachers Association at Toll Gate School.  

In her spare time, she mentored young juvenile court offenders, wrote advertisements/jingles for WELD Radio, took ballroom dance lessons, catered church events, auctioned her pies for fund raisers and travelled on every band trip during her children’s school years. 

Aggie and Elmo owned and operated Pownell’s Restaurant and she also shared her cooking talent in nearly every restaurant in Moorefield for over 40 years.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastors Mark Flynn and Wade Armentrout officiants. Interment will follow in the Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4 – 7 PM Wednesday at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street in Moorefield.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances of Mrs. Pownell may be made through contributions to the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church in her name, 100 N. Elm Street Moorefield, WV 26836.
